With a ring in her very straight and well-shaped nose and her long, straight, black hair, she reminds me of a gypsy. She defies the world with her body language and smoldering gaze (in an angry not seductive way). And as of today she's my newest student.
I've seen her around campus a few times and always given her a wide berth. You don't want to get in the way of that kind of attitude! Today our conversations went something like this:
Me: Welcome to class. What's your name?
her: (mumbles as she glares at me)
Me: One more time, please?
her: ****! (her name, not a curse word. but it kind of sounds like one)
Me: Here's your syllabus. Please read it (as I flee back to my table)
after class:
her: Is it always going to be like that?
me: Like what? About Native American tribes?
her: (nods sharply, says nothing, arms folded defiantly)
me: No, just some days. So if you're bored by Indians, don't worry. We'll do other things.
her: (nods again)
me: (thinking I detect a glimmer of a smile, I smile back. What little smile there may have been suddenly disappears, and she stalks out of class).
Suffice it to say, this girl is far from warm and fuzzy. And even if she's not as bad as she seems upon first impression, she's still a bit...intimidating. I'm hoping we can bond over her being Middle Eastern and me loving everything about Arabs, but I'm skeptical. We'll see how things develop.

Ugh, sounds intimidating. I would flee to my table, too.
good luck. :S sounds awful.
Fautie says:
You sure have a lot of overbearing students. We need to talk about you being more assertive. Let them know on your turf you are boss and if they don't like it they can lump it. You don't have to be mean about it but just matter of fact. I cannot imagine having a feeling of needing to flee back to my desk because one of my employees was intimidating. Course I can just fire them if they give me crap.
That physical description and attitude sounds just like the girl who works at our local AutoZone!
I don't know why, but every time I go, I see her giving attitude to her supervisor, shifting blame for something and declaring she needs a smoke break. It's kind of strange to be a customer to someone who seems so sour.
She took it upon herself to summarize every Chapter in Code Talker, which is nice, but I didn't tell her to, so when the in class journaling assignment this AM was to summarize Ch. 7 or 8, I didn't know what to do with her. She paid for the poetry book so I'm assuming she's here to stay. Oh, this trip is going to be interesting.
With the nose ring and the long black hair I started having visions of Melyngoch . . . only to be disappointed that it was a story about some other black tressed, nare bejeweled girl.
*sigh*
Anyhow, sorry 'bout it. I'm sure things'll get better.
