T-rav thinks blogs are slowly dying, and I must say, he might be right. Are they already being replaced by the faster, easier facebook? We're all about instant gratification these days, and for that, there's nothing better than facebook.
Facebook makes nosing around people's business a whole lot easier. You don't have to snoop around various websites to see what people are up to. Just a quick click will bring you to far more information about people's lives than you ever wanted to know (honestly, do we really care how many times you're going to the gym or what your dog did last night or how clean your house is?). Universal adoration comes easier on facebook. Those who hate you can be blocked, and a true facebook junkie has dozens of fellow addicts just jumping at the chance to tell you how amAHzing you are. It's a little burst of superficial self-esteem at every turn.
But truth be told, I kind of miss blogs. I don't miss those comments giving glory laud and honor to the writer (I find them insincere and obnoxiously similar to those facebook comments I refer to), but I miss knowing what my friends are up to. I miss reading full sentences and paragraphs and stories containing actual nouns, verbs, and prepositions. And punctuation! Yes, blogs do have their faults (being completely 100% self-centered for one thing), but they gave a bit more insight to what people were actually thinking and feeling. For a few short but lovely years, I was able to keep in contact with friends of mine who may not be so good at emailing/calling/texting. So if blogs really go away, I will miss that. As much as I enjoy facebook (and I really do), it's just not the same.

I've been wondering this too... especially as I get less comments on my blog, or find myself not wanting to take all the time to write out a whole blog post. The agony of 5 minutes!
But I will say, when I get a comment from someone on facebook that I may hold in less esteem, it irks me much much less than when I get a comment on my blog from such a person.
I'm going to try to stick with blogging, for the same reason you said. It is so fun to keep up with people. Promise you will keep yours and I will keep mine...ok?? We can be the last two blogs :)
P.S. If you enjoy reading full sentences and grammatically correct writing, you might not want to read mine :) But you are free to look at the pictures.
Ha! Ginny, my posts are far from grammatically perfect or precisely punctuated. I often find myself writing things I've told my ESL students they're not allowed to do in essays...but at least we're using full WORDS rather than bits and pieces that once resembled words.
Just for you Kelly: I'm running 4 miles tonight. My dog is hating the fireworks and our house is a mess and full of smoky camping gear.
One place they are not going away is the State department. FS bloggers (and spouses) are increases at a rate similar to weeds. It's been really something to see unfold. Here's a pretty comprehensive list that a friend of mine has collected (http://lifeafterjerusalem.blogspot.com/). woa.
I'm also 95 when it comes to facebook so I won't be jumping blog ship any time soon.
I love blogs because they are so much more personal. I have lots of facebook friends, but do I ever really talk to them? No. Do I really know what's going on in their lives? Not really.
I hope that blogs don't go away. Like other people have said, I enjoy getting a sense of a person's personality (and e-presence?) through blog posts. I don't get as much of that through FB statuses.
Also, I think blogs are a better way or organize information and ideas. For me, at least, blogs aren't just short messages about what is going on in my life. I want to mull over ideas. It's too hard to mull on Facebook, and you can't organize your status updates with labels either. :)
Blogs 4 ever! Have a great summer. Stay cool.
