dreams, insomnia, and parallel universes

Let me begin today by detailing a typical night's "sleep" for me:

I go to bed somewhere between 11:30 and 12. I promptly fall asleep without much trouble and do not stir for a few hours. By between 2 and 3 am, I have woken up, looked at the clock, walked around, and gotten back in bed. After 30ish minutes of tossing and turning, I fall asleep. Well, I kind of fall asleep. It's a weird state of sleep where I'm not entirely conscious of what's going on around me, but I'm definitely not completely asleep.

And then the dreams begin.

My dreams are amazingly vivid and life-like. I'm always aware of what's going on and have completely coherent conversations and interactions with people. My dream-self lives its own life
in my dreams, a life that is very different from my own. I fight battles, (including fist fights, although I've never been able to give anyone a good punch in the face. I think it has to do with having never actually socked anybody's eye in real life), fly around the world (and I mean literally fly, not on a plane) and occasionally do a bit of magic.

But I'm actually starting to think that my dreams aren't just dreams; I think my soul is being transported into a parallel universe where it is forced to fight and chase bad guys most of the night, and my body sleeping in my bed feels the effects of the adventures. On nights when my dream battles are especially tiring, I wake up drenched in sweat and exhausted. On the times when I'm not fighting, I usually have all too real conversations with my real-life friends...except there's always one different and strange thing about the person I'm talking to (ex.- last night zillah's older sister was pregnant), but everything else is usually the same. And then when I wake up, it's really really hard to separate what happened in my dream with real life...I'm still not sure if sars is pregnant or not...T-rav assures me she's not...

And lest you think I just have a hero-complex, I'm not always the main character in my dreams. Sometimes I just observe what everyone else is doing and don't actually participate.

Trav thinks my dreams are crazy enough they would make an excellent Japanimation film. He's probably right.

whoa, Kelly!! You told me this on the phone the other night, but it is very interesting to see it written on your blog! I wish I could help with that...maybe you need to go to a sleep clinic like Grandma and Grandpa and Uncle Jim have gone to... and have a sleep study done!! Very interesting, I am wondering about your hormone levels... night sweating can be a sign of a hormone change/ imbalance, but I am sure there are many other possibilities too. Lunesta, and Ambien CR are 2 possible solutions...talk with your doctor, as "Dr.Momma" is not the expert!!!

i'm sure that sarah will be extremely surprised by this news, as will my parents.

don't look at your clock. if you do, then a part of your brain remains "awake," always wondering what time it is, and will wake you up/keep you from getting a really deep sleep.

I have to say, I'm a little jealous. I never remember my dreams. I pass out once my head hits the pillow and hardly ever wake up in the middle of the night.

What have you been reading lately? You should get one of those dream enterpreting books.

Oh, sars!

Hmm, how long has this been going on (the sleep issue, not sars being pregnant in your dreams)? I agree with anonymous, it's not a bad idea to chat with your doctor. I'm not suggesting that you have something pathological going on, but it's a good idea to make sure there isn't a physical cause.

Anyway, I hope you can start getting better sleep in the near future! Poor sleep = poor body functioning = feel crappy + mood alterations = affects your life and relationships. That's my experience, anyway.

Sweet dreams.

Amen! I have the craziest dreams and they are so real, I too have a hard time seperating the dream world from reality. It always takes a bit for me to clear my head when I wake up.
One reaccuring theme for me: trying to find a bathroom that actually has a door and isn't in the open for all to see. I have also flown in my dreams...
So, you're not weird.

You are CRAZY. What did you stop taking your crazy pills, cause vivid dreams are one of the withdrawl symptoms, (yes I know haha) That is funny though. Maybe you should star some screen writing to put your dreams into films. Although I woudnt do them in japanimation or whatev its called. I HATE that stuff!!

Fautie the concerned says:

Hmmm....this is not good. It may be genetic. I have had fairly wild dreams not infrequently. I cannot count the times your mother had had to shake me awake as I screamed in terror because someone, thing, monster, devil or alien was after me. One time I was in a large mansion and some dude with a big knife was after me. I ran up one of those grand stair cases and at the top was a half circle window and a balcony but there was nowhere else to run because there were solid walls to my right and left. The dude with the knife came up the stairs and I started screaming at which point your mother whacked me and said WAKE UP!

Typically I am drenched in sweat after such dreams.

But such dreams have become less the older I get. I do and have had at times insomnia as well. That may have been more due to parathyroid issues which leads me to suggest that you do get your hormones checked. If you are not sleeping you could have a parathyroid issue as well.

See your doc.

I must admit that I AM glad I'm usually the hero in my dreams. They're usually not scary in a nightmare kind of way, and although I don't always enjoy fighting my way through the night, I do feel a little like Sydney Bristow when I wake up.

I should also add that I don't have dreams like this EVERY night. They come and go in spurts: every night for 2 weeks, none for 4 days, or something along those lines. At least I get a break.
