Just say NO to the EU!

I have now applied for about 15 teaching positions in the past 4 days. Of those 15, about 4 have responded, all with the same result: "thanks, you seem nice, but we want someone with EU working papers." You see, the EU has made it very, very difficult for non-EU passport holding people to get jobs in Europe, and more expensive to get into museums. And the more I research on finding work in Italy, the more despondent I become.

"Theoretically it isn't possible to work in the EU unless you have a passport from one of the 15 "old" EU member states OR unless your employer is willing to undergo the pr
ocess of obtaining a work visa for you. It is definitely much, much harder to get a job in the EU if you have a passport from a non-EU country."

It seems to me that all the EU has done for the world is made it much more expensive for anyone but Brits to travel in Western Europe, and severely restricted opportunities for non-Western Europeans to work legally. If you know of any other benefits, by all means, fill me in, but from my perspective, there is little point to the whole "unification" of Europe. What's the bloody point?!

Some people suggest going to Italy and contacting an employer once you get there, in hopes that they'll be impressed enough with you that they will put for the extra effort of filling out working papers for you. Others recommend working "under the table," which would be fine until I get caught and then am banned from ever staying longer than 3 weeks in Italy for the rest of my life...let's just say that's not my preferred option.

My solution: Down with the EU!!

Hmm... I had no idea EU was so protectionist/isolationist.

My understanding of the EU was that it originally would increase trade by providing a common currency... not that I buy into that, but that's what I've heard.

Wouldn't you think that ESL schools would want native English speakers to help teach their classes? I guess it's not important that the US is the largest English speaking country in the world.

didn't know you blogged, but was surfing around the Zirker world to see what everyone is up to. Add me add me! You two sound like you're doing fantastic. Good luck in your job search in Italy.

One possibility is that you could attend some kind of formal education there - a university or something, which could then potentially make it easier to find work..I know it makes getting insurance, id cards and all that business easier. Also, maybe there is an American business that would want you to teach for them. I know there is a huge French language school in France that also exists in the States. Maybe there is something similar for Italy. Otherwise, pooh pooh on the EU. And good luck! We cannot wait to come and visit you - I already have been reading my guidebook.

I'm American, living in the UK. It's not that hard. You just have to go about it the right way, and not give up o your first try and understanding of the process.
It's actually harder for EU citizens to work in the USA than for Americans to work in the EU...
