a car quandry

The time has come for T-rav and me to buy a new car. Our Giño seems to be thinking about threatening transmission problems again (it hasn't done anything...yet...but T-rav is worried). We've been hunting for something new, something that might be worth a little more than $800, something that might not break down at the bat of an eye. But we can't decide what to get. Our selection is limited since T-rav is hunting in the greater Tennessee area (meaning the surrounding states and their neighbors- Texas, Illinois, Mississippi, etc). I'll let you imagine the kind of selection available in Memphis. Just think ghetto and you'll be about right.

All I know is that I want something small. Really small. And something cool. But I'm trying to decide if cool = frivolous. Does it? If a car is cool, but gets great mileage and has great reviews and looks the way we want it to, but might only have 2 doors is that bad? I just can't decide.

2 door cars are not practical at ALL. That being said, some are cool. What are you looking at buying? Want to buy our volvo? (ps volvos are really cool! ;) )that aside, i like mazdas and the toyota camry is nice or the prius (very economical and GREEN friendly hahaha)

Eh, I'm kind of anti-two-door cars. But that's just me.

If it's a really great car, though, you should just get it!

What kind is it?

P.S. Priuses are really great. And the dashboard makes you feel like you're in a spaceship. You should consider one.

I bought a really big car (Truck) with two doors and regretted it when I had to play taxi for carless roommates. Getting in and out of the back is a pain. But if it's just you and T-rav and you want a mini cooper, go for it.

On the other hand, I recommend the Mazda 3. Nice and sportyish, comfy, and good mpg (30-33). Anything beats the 10mpg of my bronco.

I think Matt is the only one who figured out what you really want.

Prius = NEVER

i knew she WANTED a mini, but i didnt think she would actually really GET one hahahaha. And whats wrong with the prius!? Its eco friendly!! it gets like 50 or 60 miles a gallon. thats great!

#1 reason I don't like the Prius is the exterior packaging.

It's possible to make a car eco-friendly and stylish at the same time. I'm all for eco-friendly, but the Prius style just doesn't do it for me.

M - I hope my anti-Prius feelings do not offend you. They are in no way directed at my friends that drive Prii, just the car itself.

Ok, it's true, I want a mini. What's wrong with that?

And I'd love a Prius as the more practical, environmental option, but there's no way I'm about to pay for one at this point.

There are two of you so a two door sounds fine to me. Besides, you'll never be riding in the back seat :)

Minis are cool. But so are Smart Cars.

you may not be riding in the back seat, but a two door, is annoying, for example, when you give someone a ride home and you have to get out so they can get out. So while there are only two of you (and it doesnt look like that will change in the near future) think about taking someone home and having to get out so they can get out. PAIN IN THE BUTT! but minis are cool, so go ahead and get one.

I despise two door cars and I have owned a number of them.

Prius's are pricey. Not gonna find one in your price range I do not think. Nice gas mileage though.

You like my Malibu Maxx. Look for a used one. You should be able to find one like mine and about the same age for the price range I think you want.

Also another cool car I like is the Pontiac Vibe. Ford Focus is ok too. I hear they are pretty reliable. I like the Ford Fusion as well but they have only been out a few years so you they may be too pricey.

How about a used Civic? Though used Honda's that are not ancient tend to be pricey.

Lots of choices out there and I am sure in a town the size of Memphis you can find something.

I think Mini's are awesome and would love one as a 'bonus' car, but they highly unpractical. They are tiny, pricey, and not very fuel efficient for their size (32mpg).

Personally, I think that you should get a 2001 or newer Subaru Impreza. More practical, 4 wheel drive, and plenty of fun.

If you want fuel economy get a diesel. They are some that beat the prius and you don't have spend thousands to replace the batteries every five years. Even the 2010 Prius only gets 50mpg and Audi has an A4 Diesel that gets 55mpg. There is also the new Honda Insight, which get 45mpg and starts at $19,000 something.
