a rant

I'm going to rant, so if any of the 5 of you who read my pitiful blog have something better to do, which I'm sure you do, don't bother reading this post.

Working in an office is a waste of one's life. And a waste of company time. Between the smoke breaks, bathroom breaks, water breaks, coffee breaks, meetings, "consultations" (read: chatting) with coworkers, and, of course, lunch, why bother coming in to work at all? Imagine how productive we could be if we actually worked during work? And for those of us who do work, and can do it without the hours of distractions, what are we to do with our remaining 6 hours of the day when we finish our task? Facebook? Amuse ourselves by googling things like "British people are..." or "best hair dryers for frizz" or write a ranting blog about their dull job.

I hate having a client whose every whim I have to satisfy. Especially when one of those clients is a complete and utter imbecile. Trite. Asinine. Exasperating. And possibly a trollop. Don't people realize that my way really will be better? Basically I despise working for someone. It's one thing to be a teacher and have a department chair to answer to. It's another thing entirely have a project manager, department manager, and client. I'm a free spirit. I don't want a job where I have to answer to so authority figures. I hate authority.

It's a damn good thing I won't be doing this forever.

On another note, I'm sick of the rain (4 days without a break) because my umbrella is broken and they're sold out everywhere so I can't buy a new one and my rain boots are in the moving truck coming across the country as I type.

How's that for whiny?

Poor Kelly! I am sorry about your umbrella. (smile)

I'm glad I'm not the only one who hates office jobs! Besides everything you mentioned, I find fluorescent lighting and desk chairs evil, and I quite hate sitting in front of a computer all day. DULL. Also, sitting at a desk, at least for me equals getting fat!

Agreed on the fat part. The funny thing is that sometimes I get home and I just feel so tired, except...well, all I have been doing is sitting in front of a computer on my fat lazy butt. Awesome.

I agree! Working in an office is lame juice.

I will bring you an umbrella in two weeks, here in Seattle we have plenty.

Kelly-
your life stinks!!! You should just move to a place that is sunny year-round so that you won't need an umbrellea. And you should start teaching full-time again!!!
Let me give you some unbiased advice.... how about ARIZONA?

j.k. I couldn't help it after your rant though.

I totally agree, Amy. I hate the florescent lights so much that I sit in semi-dimness with a reading lamp.

And phin, I feel tired sometimes too. Which is ridiculous because I didn't DO anything all day! I can't even claim being brain-tired!

Oh! You poor thing! I know just how you feel. I used to come home and complain to Brian everyday after work! Office jobs can really drain the life out of you!

Hopefully we can help cheer you up next weekend! (I hope it stops raining!!)

Kelly, that was pretty whinerific. Maybe you should write a book with your free work time. Just think of all the good stories you are storing away for later. Plus, now you can watch episodes of The Office with a new perspective. In fact, you should start watching the series from the beginning, while you re at work. that's what you can do instead of work. Best of luck.

Offices can create inefficiencies at times. That is why we chain people at my firm to their desks. And if the speak on something other than work issues we beat them.

Actually I have quite enjoyed working in an office for my career. I have my own spot, it is a bit of a home, I work well in my space, I have people I can associate with and a team to work with. If you work in a well run office setting it is quite nice.

And you will always have someone in authority over you. Don't you have a dept head when you teach? I know you hate authority and being told what to do. Me too. Get used to it.
