In a few months, the project I have been working on at the company that hired me when I moved to DC will be over and I'll either have the option to stay and start a new project or quit.
I'm not sure what to do.
I don't love my job. It's rather boring, sometimes mindless, and keeps me cooped up in an office all day long. I'd rather be teaching, and having this job prevents me from taking more classes and really getting my foot in the door at Gtown.
On the other hand, it gives me a salary, and I really like getting paid. I have decent benefits, excellent co-workers, and the most diverse, flexible work environment one could want. One might say I'm crazy for even considering leaving something relatively stable to be an adjunct at some university where the pay is always minimal and respect hard to come by. In reality, this decision will mostly be based on what kind of job T-rav gets (ie how much money he makes) after he finishes up his temp job next month. I only have the option of quitting if Trav's job, whatever it ends up being, is enough to pay the bills.
But it's made me think lately about what's more important: doing something you love (or at least really like) or doing something that makes a lot of money (relatively speaking, of course. I AM in the language field after all). What do you think?

Right now I'm making enough money to get by, but I'd definitely be happier if I was making a bit more, because then I could get ahead on my student loans and see my family more than once a year.
So I'm inclined to say you should go for the money.
On the other hand, I think I'm happier in my current job than you are in yours, and it sounds like mine also offers me more flexibility.
If you leave your current job, would you be eligible to be rehired or would you have effectively burned your bridges there?
I'm sure they'd rehire me. They're quite accustomed to people coming and going and returning.
Well then, I don't see a real downside to taking a break from your current job (assuming Travis' new job pays the bills).
Katya, you're so wise. ;)
Well, it's easy to be decisive about other people's lives. ;)
money.
if trav gets a job that can pay the bills, then i say quit the job you don't like and focus on teaching, especially since you can go back to the textbook job as needed. you want to be able to live, of course, but what's the point if you spend most of your time is a drag? if you can eat and have your job be something you like more than not, then you're in pretty good shape.
