I've noticed that I always get the most comments on my blog whenever I post about politics...and since I'm a glutton for comments, even when they're not always perfectly harmonious (be nice, fautie), I decided I should say something about our new President Elect.
First of all, what do you think?
My opinions of Obama (as well as McCain) have long been mixed. I voted for Nader because I couldn't make up my mind between Obama and McCain, and, of course, because I firmly believe that a strong third party would keep US politicians on their toes. Whether Nader should lead that third party, or whether that third party should be the Green Party is definitely questionable, but I digress. Back to Obama. I question his health care plan, tax increases, his lack of experience, and the fact that many people I consider to be absolutely nuts are obsessed with him.
BUT. Whatever my personal opinions of Obama may be, I am satisfied that he, rather than McCain, will be our next president for this reason: for some reason, people find hope in Obama. You can joke about him being the "Messiah" or whatever, but I think it will be good for America to have a president that the majority, and an especially vocal majority at that, believes in. He makes a good symbol of America (ie. he looks/talks pretty), and I think it is always good for a country to have a change of pace. Whether these changes will be good remains to be seen, but I for one have hope that he will take America in direction that will be an improvement.

First off, dad is always nice when he comments. He just likes to prove people wrong as much as possible!!
I didnt like either very much, but over the past few month, Obama really has become more appealing, if not for the hope reason, but also because he is the one who will hopefully be able to "fix" our international reputation which has really sucked a lot lately. And for obvious, sound reasons. Mccain is a Maverick, likes his guns and is always right-obviously. ;)
It is sort of funny, however, that people are SO obsessed about him....
anyway, whatever, good luck to him, he's definitely going to need it and I hope he can manage to clear up some of the HUGE mess we are in!!
I agree with what you said about hope. I'm glad that people have a renewed sense of hope in this country because of Obama. It will be interesting to see if he can live up to all of the expectations that are now placed on his shoulders!
In regards to hope, I was curious to find out if Obama's election will renew confidence in the stock market. I found one blog yesterday that wrote that the DOW was still down by 400 points, but then I heard earlier today on the radio that the DOW is up by 200 points. It will be interesting to see if this "hope" will trickle into the economy as well.
i voted for nader, too, and for similar reasons. for as nice as obama looks and talks, my research led me to conclude that he is just another politician who accepted huge donations from corporations etc (after he said he wouldn't) and doesnt ACTUALLY support issues i think are important. that said, he does seem to have a galvanizing effect on folks, which is nice and hopeful for our reputation and reality, and i am relieved that race has ceased to be enough of an issue in the unites states that he made it to the white house.
third parties are really important and i am glad to know others voted as they saw fit and did not see a vote for a third party as a vote cast to the wind.
obama is really handsome, though. i'll give him that.
Didn't he used to wrestle in WWE under the name of "The Rock."
Close your eyes and listen when he talks next time, the remsemblance is a little scary.
I was talking to Brock last night about all this and we both came to conclusion that he is a good choice for our international reputation. To me that is important, especially being an Arab and all I hear is how America sucks from my dad's side of the family. Maybe Obama can change their minds.
I am hopeful for Obama. I think you have to be because if he screws it up it's not only his reputation that suffers but our whole country.
A lot of people are talking about our reputation with the rest of the world. I think that's important but none of that will matter if our country can't do well here at home. Obama's Socialistic tendencies scare me but for now I'm willing to wait and see.
I guess you could say I'm hopeful but apprehensive.
I can't wait to see what all the celebrities say when he doesn't do all the stuff they hope and dream he will. Because I love celebrities, especially when they are talking about politics.
I agree with Marlo. It's what I've been saying since last Tues. but I'm going to add in the black population who voted for him because of his race. I can't wait to hear what they say in four years because campaigns are run idealistically, but there is red tape to cut even for the President of the U.S. I hope he can accomplish what he set out to.
(This is Diana's sister, BTW.) I love your blog and Trav's, too. Very intelligently and thoughtfully written.
Fautie the nice says:
Me? Not nice? Pah!
As for Obama, well I did vote for him. In fact it is the first time I voted for a democrat (not counting my county DA).
Perhaps my vote was more a protest than anything else. I was not a McCain fan. And while I liked Palin I actually did think she was a poor choice for VP which made me like McCain less. And I believe the republican party has abandoned much of what I thought it stood for.
Even though much of what Obama stands for I do not agree with I do see him as balanced, thoughtful and he does have leadership charisma. A president needs that. He also will I think bring us respect in the world stage again and he will be more restrained in how he uses our military. I think on the economy both McCain and Obama will fail because politicians for not have the back bone to do what we need to do to fix it.
So those are a few of the reasons. I have not seen a leader like this that attracts people since Reagan and perhaps before that JFK. I wish him well and great success,
Fautie Hill
