Acoding to pres Kimball, you are being selfish by not having like a hundred babies already. Gosh. ;)

(PS that was in my YW class last week...about having lots of babies and not putting it off. I almost laughed!!)

Well it ain't talking about fruit. I'm curious to hear how you interpret it... because I thought there's only one way to interpret it. Obviously I'm mistaken.

On a tangent, I think the phrase 'replenish' to be of interesting use here. Doesn't replenish generally have the context of 're-filling' or 're-populating'? Is this referring to the dinosaurs, or what?

Well I think "replenish" means replace yourself, thus husband and wife equals 2 people to replace.

Multiple means "times" your replenishments: so 2x? (whatever you are up for).

I think that replenish also implies teaching your offspring the Gospel, and other principles, values, and knowledge that you hold. A resposibility to not just have children, but to teach them as well.

What do you think Kelly?

To me, it means to have a child or children. I interpret the "multiply" factor means to duplicate yourself by having a child. "Multiply" could mean more than one child, but I don't think it necessarily does mean that.

I think that "replenish" refers to creating young, new life. This word is especially fitting, since this phrase was used in the biblical commandment to Adam and Eve - they needed to "replenish" the earth so the human race could continue.

I'm curious to know your opinion, Ixoj.

I think there are two components to the multiply and replenish commandment: the mortal, and more obvious, component of actual human reproduction; and a more eternal component....because all commandments are eternal, I really believe that it also refers to your role in the eternities as a creator. With "earth" referring to both the mortal (have babies now) earth, and "earth" referring to the eternal destiny of the earth as the Celestial Kingdom.

Now, it gets a little hairy when you're dealing with this in mortality....cause there are couples like Joe and me who CAN'T physically multiply...

You'll remember that Adam and Eve were given the commandment when they were in the Garden of Eden, and they, too, could not procreate at that point. So I don't feel that far removed from the two of them (in that regard).

So we're commanded in the eternal sense to participate in eternal-worlds-without-end sort of creation...

...and yet I'm well aware that we're commanded to birth dem babies. It's hard to reconcile for someone like me....but in the words of my ever-so-wise husband, "You don't have to be a parent to grow a child," either. I got a lot of insight from reading talks by Ardeth Kapp (who was childless) about this very topic.

Real comments?? Huff!

But honestly I don't see how one can conclude that it means any differently than "Adam, Eve, go have children." And if you put the LDS spin on it from 2 Nephi 2 it seems pretty clear since Lehi argues that in their state of innocence Adam and Eve could not keep the command to multiply and replenish. They could not do that and not partake of the fruit. Be keeping the one they could not keep the other-have babies-and thus the opposition in all things issue.

The rest of Christianity concludes the same thing.

On another note, I think it may had been John A.Wistoe who siad the replenish meant that the earth had at one time had other humans so Adam and Eve were to repopulate. This was I think his explanation for cavemen type pre Home Sapian types.

Anyway have kids whenever you wish or not. That is up to you, Trav and God.

Sometimes I do not blame you for putting it off. Some days I wonder why I had any of the little rug rats.
