Today, I was told by one of my Korean students that I am "pretty...but smart."

He sounded surprised. Does this mean all semester he's been thinking I'm dumb? Exactly how am I supposed to take that?

what he means is that pretty usually equals not smart, and smart people are ugly. of course.
