Tomorrow my fellow ESL instructor Maddie and I will be taking our ESL students to Southern Utah on a 4 day camping trip. We've spent the first 5 weeks of class discussing Utah history, native American history and current issues, desert geology and environmental issues. And now we're going to take 11 Koreans, 2 Thai, 2 Taiwanese and 1 Japanese to Monument Valley and Arches so they can experience the things they've learned. Their "assignments" include terribly difficult things like speaking English (which they whined and cried about), talking to the Navajo rancher we will be visiting, and participating in a scavenger hunt. Not a bad week of class, eh?
Oh, and we might go rafting.
Which sends shivers of terror up my spine, regardless of how many times Zillah assures me I won't be knocked out of my raft, trapped underneath it, sucked into a whirlpool and nearly drown (like she almost did). I didn't realize I had this irrational fear of rafting until we started talking about it and my stomach knotted up with waves of nausea. I'd rather go rock climbing. Or rappelling. bungee jumping. Or sky diving. Or almost anything other than rafting.
I hope it rains on Saturday.

Fun fun. Why are you scared of rafting? Just wear a life vest hahahaha you'll be fine and it will be fun!
I like rafting, but there are times when I have been scared too. Just try and get in the boat with the most competent students (i.e. the ones who will respond when someone yells, "ROW!").
Have a great time. I'm anxious to see pictures when you get back.
Sounds like fun. Be prepared to take a lot of pictures.
Party on. Rafting is really fun. Just sit near the guide and kick hard if you fall in. It's super fun, you'll love it. Once when I went, we had a mountaineering guide with us who routinely took people up Mt McKinley, but he too was deathly afraid of rafting. Interesting.
So now I know why you are not answering my phone calls. You are in the desert. I hope that is the reason why. Anyway about the rafting thing. You will probably have so much fun. I can't wait to hear all about it.
It sounds like fun, and I don't think rafting will be nearly as dreadful as you think.
