free time, anyone?

Before I start this post, I want to make it very clear that I am not yet bored. I'm simply anticipating the inevitable. And frantically trying to stave it off as long as possible.

What do you do when you've suddenly been thrust into a situation where you have absolutely no responsibilities? No job, no homework, no calling to fulfill, no kids to take care of, nothing at all. And how long can you go before you start feeling crazy? I know it sounds delightful to have that kind of time on your hands, but I'm not sure it really is so fabulous. It gives me too much time to think...and stew...and wonder...and become anxious about things I shouldn't worry about...

I'm in Memphis now. And I've been here for 2.5 days. And I'm starting to wonder how on earth I'm going to occupy myself for the next 2 months. Bear in mind that I currently have neither a car (hopefully that will soon change) nor a lot of money to spend doing touristy things. Occasionally one of our friends here who does have a car will want to go out and about (they've already hit most of the free days at the local museums), but I can't always rely on her to take me places. Our apartment complex does have a pool and a workout room, both of which I plan to take full advantage, but that leaves me with a good 12 hours of my day open and available. I can read (books and the internet), cook (though I have to plan everything ahead of time since I can't get to the grocery store), blog (but what do I blog about when all I do is stay in my apartment complex), sleep, sit around...

Any suggestions?

Maybe crafts? Find somewhere to volunteer. The local library, if it is within walking distance. Is there a temple nearby? Do they have public transit? That is all I can think of. Although in my opinion, laying out by the pool sounds like a perfectly acceptable way to spend the remaining 12 hours of your day :)

Welcome to my life. At first it is really cool but after one week it gets old fast. I should call you. Do you have the same number?

Write a novel.

Come visit me.

Learn as much origami as you can. (I did this when I had insomnia on my mission. I forgot it all by the next transfer.)

Come visit me.

Well, there are lots of things you can do. Take up long distance cycling. Do you have your bike? You can do that a few hours a day. Go work at a soup kitchen. Are there sister missionaries in our ward? Do team ups with them or ask your bish if there are people that need a visit from a nice young lady like you. Come to Palmyra and stay with fam for a few weeks and cook your lovely meals for your dad. Do geneology, get lots of good movies to watch, sleep in, take an online course,do yoga, etc.

Hey Kelly! I'm glad you made it safely. How was the Feis? I want to hear all about it. Enjoy your nice break. Maybe you should write a book this summer.

Welcome to the lives of SAHMs.

I thought you were going to work on a publication. How are the libraries there - could you do research?

You could write articles again. (Insert evil laugh) That's what I did when we lived in NYC (when I wasn't doing thesis research).

Or you can just call me. We'll while away this summer on the phone.

Or you can watch Oprah. Every. single. day.

Get a pet! I prefer cats. Or you can do some freelance. Or you can take up an MMORPG.

Learn to knit. It's the wave of the future and the fabric of the past. Just do it. You can visit me instead of your sister, since it is on the way back to Utah and my husband will be gone anyway. I have a spare bed......Wichita is so cool.....On a tangent, I am coming to Utah for a month starting Sept 10, so get ready to party.
