blech

T-rav is a strong proponent of throwing your immune system "curve balls," believing that by keeping your intestinal tract on its toes, you'll be able to handle any unintentional culinary surprises that may sneak their way in. This means that he'll eat just about anything...from 2 week old food and tacos purchased from roadside stands to candy off the floor and mystery meat in foreign countries. And he claims that he's never gotten sick eating what most people would never touch. Although I'm not quite as extreme as he, I'll eat almost anything from anyplace, especially if I have a coke handy- always drink a coke when you eat something scary because it will kill whatever bugs manage to make it in (does that ever make you wonder what's in coke?). Except for leftovers; I hate leftovers. Sure, I'll eat 1-day old food on occasion (dinner for lunch the next day), but only if they were really good the first time.

Yesterday I broke my rule. And I'm paying for it now.

On Sunday last week I made some delicious rice pudding. I kept meaning to eat it all day on Monday, but never got around to it. Well, it hung around in the fridge until I rediscovered it yesterday. In my defense, all rational thought had left me because I was utterly starving; any and everything looked fantastic. It was in this state of mind that I decided to reheat the pudding and have it for lunch, much to T-rav's amazement. (It was a WEEK OLD! What was I thinking?!)

The moral of the story is this: throw your system a curve ball on a regular basis. Your stomach will thank you.

I think if you're going to break a rule, break it for rice pudding. Sorry, Kelly, we should have finished it off before we left. Next time.

How big a curveball do I need to throw myself to keep my intestines tough?

Wait

You said you paid for it but you should eat something partially rotten once in a while cause your stomach will thank you? I am confused. I assume you mean you ended up ill but had you tried to food full of botulism lite you may not have been ill.

I must say I question Trav's theory here. Maybe he is just blessed with an iron gut but people do actually die of food poisoning. I think it better to take the adage with food-When in doubt throw it out.

I'm with T-rav. Part of staying healthy is letting your body fight off sickness. A little dirt here, the occasional bacteria there. Leftovers are a good source, I agree.

There is a limit though. The other day, Jen stopped by my work and I smelled something funny in her car. A cucumber had gone all soft and squishy, and I picked it up to throw it away. Unfortunately, in the process, its rottenness dumped all over me, and I had to go home for a change of pants. The smell was rank and I was disgusted. How does T-rav feel about rotten vegetables?

I agree with Dad. I don't think eating nast sick things makes your stomach stronger!

God made dirt and dirt don't hurt.

A little floor spice makes everything nice.

I also subscribe to the curveball theory, though not to the extremes that I have seen travis carry it out to.

Maybe I should clarify: you should throw your system a curve ball OFTEN (as in at least twice a month), so that you don't suffer as I suffered.

I'm also not condoning the consumption of rotten food- just the stuff somewhere in between.

I remember T-rav eating licorice off the floor at the movie theater and I think it was stuck down with soda. i am with T-rav...the immune system needs a curve ball, but a curve ball is not rotten food, just food that may be a little older than normal. The line is a whole lot clearer with candy...since it lasts forever, there is no line. But cooked chicken..the line is a lot fuzzier. i routinely ate candy I found in the MTC mulch and milk we "confiscated" from dorm windows. But I have to say i would never eat rice pudding....even if you made it fresh before my eyes. On a random side note, kids who have contact with animal feces are much less likely to have allergies, so I guess we should eat a little dirt now and then. I hope you feel better.
